यदि मामप्रतीकारम् अशस्त्रं शस्त्रपाणयः ।

धार्तराष्ट्रा रणे हन्युः(स्) तन्मे क्षेमतरं भवेत् ॥१.४६॥

yadi māmapratīkāram aśastraṁ śastrapāṇayaḥ ।

dhārtarāṣṭrā raṇe hanyuḥ(s) tanme kṣemataraṁ bhavet

Even if the armed sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra kill me in battle while I am unarmed and unresisting, that would be better for me.

यदि yadi = if, माम् mām = me, अप्रतीकारम् apratīkāram = not resisting / without retaliation, अशस्त्रम् aśastram = unarmed, शस्त्रपाणयः śastrapāṇayaḥ = those with weapons in hand, धार्तराष्ट्राः dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ = the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, रणे raṇe = in battle, हन्युः hanyuḥ = they may kill, तत् tat = that, मे me = for me, क्षेमतरम् kṣemataram = better / more beneficial, भवेत् bhavet = would be

Reflection

Am I calling my withdrawal “peace” when it is actually avoidance of a difficult duty?

Will my silence or non-resistance reduce adharma, or allow it to continue?

Reflection

What is the “bow” in my life — the duty I am tempted to drop when emotions become strong?

Have I ever made a major decision while my mind was śoka-saṁvigna [shaken by sorrow]?
