

अर्जुन उवाच
एवं(म्) सततयुक्ता ये भक्तास्त्वां पर्युपासते ।
ये चाप्यक्षरमव्यक्तं(न्) तेषां(ङ्) के योगवित्तमाः ॥
arjuna uvāca
evaṁ(m) satatayuktā ye bhaktāstvāṁ paryupāsate ।
ye cāpyakṣaramavyaktaṁ(n) teṣāṁ(ṅ) ke yogavittamāḥ ॥
Arjuna asks: among the ever-steadfast devotees who meditate upon Bhagavān as taught before, and those who meditate upon the imperishable unmanifest brahman, who are the best yogis?

मय्यावेश्य मनो ये मां(न्) नित्ययुक्ता उपासते ।
श्रद्धया परयोपेताः(स्) ते मे युक्ततमा मताः ॥
śrī-bhagavān uvāca
mayyāveśya mano ye māṁ(n) nityayuktā upāsate ।
śraddhayā parayopetāḥ(s) te me yuktatamā matāḥ ॥
Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa says: among the two groups, those who worship Me with minds absorbed in Me, with constant commitment and supreme faith, are considered by Me to be the most accomplished yogis.

◈Do we consciously place the mind on what is truly important, or do we let it keep drifting?
◈Do we stay committed with śraddhā, or do we give up when results are not immediately visible?

ये त्वक्षरमनिर्देश्यम् अव्यक्तं(म्) पर्युपासते ।
सर्वत्रगमचिन्त्यं(ञ्) च कूटस्थमचलं(न्) ध्रुवम् ॥
ye tvakṣaramanirdeśyaṁ(m) avyaktaṁ paryupāsate ।
sarvatragamacintyaṁ(ñ) ca kūṭasthamacalaṁ(n) dhruvam ॥
Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa now speaks of those who meditate upon the imperishable, indefinable, unmanifest, all-pervading, inconceivable, changeless, unmoving, and eternal reality.

◈Do I assume that only what I can see and define is real?
◈Can I begin to appreciate that the deepest truth may not be available as an object?

संनियम्येन्द्रियग्रामं(म्) सर्वत्र समबुद्धयः ।
ते प्राप्नुवन्ति मामेव सर्वभूतहिते रताः ॥
saṁniyamyendriyagrāmaṁ(m) sarvatra samabuddhayaḥ ।
te prāpnuvanti māmeva sarvabhūtahite ratāḥ ॥
Those who restrain the sense organs, maintain equanimity everywhere, and delight in the welfare of all beings also attain Me alone.

क्लेशोऽधिकतरस्तेषाम् अव्यक्तासक्तचेतसाम् ।
अव्यक्ता हि गतिर्दुःखं(न्) देहवद्भिरवाप्यते ॥
kleśo'dhikatarasteṣām avyaktāsaktacetasām ।
avyaktā hi gatirduḥkhaṁ(n) dehavadbhiravāpyate ॥
Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa says that the path of the unmanifest is more difficult for those whose minds are attached to the unmanifest, because the unmanifest goal is attained with difficulty by those with body-identification.

ये तु सर्वाणि कर्माणि मयि संन्यस्य मत्पराः ।
अनन्येनैव योगेन मां(न्) ध्यायन्त उपासते ॥
ye tu sarvāṇi karmāṇi mayi sannyasya matparāḥ ।
ananyenaiva yogena māṁ(n) dhyāyanta upāsate ॥
Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa describes those who dedicate all actions to Him, keep Him as the primary goal, and meditate upon Him with undivided commitment.

तेषामहं(म्) समुद्धर्ता मृत्युसंसारसागरात् ।
भवामि नचिरात्पार्थ मय्यावेशितचेतसाम् ॥
teṣāmahaṁ(m) samuddhartā mṛtyusaṁsārasāgarāt ।
bhavāmi nacirātpārtha mayyāveśitacetasām ॥
Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa says that for those whose minds are fixed on Him, He soon becomes the rescuer from the ocean of saṁsāra, which is marked by mortality.
तेषाम् teṣām = of them / for them, अहम् aham = I, समुद्धर्ता samuddhartā = rescuer / uplifter, मृत्युसंसारसागरात् mṛtyusaṁsārasāgarāt = from the ocean of death-bound saṁsāra, भवामि bhavāmi = I become / I am, न na = not, चिरात् cirāt = after a long time, पार्थ pārtha = O Pārtha, मयि mayi = in me, आवेशितचेतसाम् āveśitacetasām = of those whose minds are fixed

◈Do I look upon Bhagavān mainly as a means for solving worldly problems, or as the goal of life itself?
◈When life feels like an ocean, do I depend only on my own strength, or do I turn my mind toward Bhagavān?

मय्येव मन आधत्स्व मयि बुद्धिं(न्) निवेशय ।
निवसिष्यसि मय्येव अत ऊर्ध्वं(न्) न संशयः ॥
mayyeva mana ādhatsva mayi buddhiṁ(n) niveśaya ।
nivasiṣyasi mayyeva ata ūrdhvaṁ(n) na saṁśayaḥ ॥
Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa asks Arjuna to fix both the mind and the intellect on Him alone; then Arjuna will abide in Him alone without any doubt.

◈Do I remember Bhagavān only in prayer, or can I learn to see Bhagavān in the whole field of life?
◈Is my devotion supported by understanding, or does it become shaky when life becomes difficult?

अथ चित्तं(म्) समाधातुं(न्) न शक्नोषि मयि स्थिरम् ।
अभ्यासयोगेन ततो(तः) मामिच्छाप्तुं(न्) धनञ्जय ॥
atha cittaṁ(m) samādhātuṁ(n) na śaknoṣi mayi sthiram ।
abhyāsayogena tato(ḥ) māmicchāptuṁ(n) dhanañjaya ॥
Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa says: if we are not able to steadily fix the mind on Viśvarūpa īśvara, then we should seek to reach Him through abhyāsa-yoga, the repeated practice of iṣṭa-devatā upāsanā.
अथ atha = if / now / however, चित्तम् cittam = mind, समाधातुम् samādhātum = to fix / to place steadily, न na = not, शक्नोषि śaknoṣi = you are able, मयि mayi = in me, स्थिरम् sthiram = steady / firm, अभ्यासयोगेन abhyāsayogena = by the yoga of repeated practice, ततः tataḥ = then, माम् mām = me, इच्छ iccha = desire / seek / try, आप्तुम् āptum = to attain, धनञ्जय dhanañjaya = O Dhanañjaya

◈Is my mind broad enough to see the whole world as Bhagavān, or is it still caught in strong likes and dislikes?
◈Can I choose one sacred focus and return to it every day with sincerity?

अभ्यासेऽप्यसमर्थोऽसि मत्कर्मपरमो भव ।
मदर्थमपि कर्माणि कुर्वन् सिद्धिमवाप्स्यसि ॥
abhyāse'pyasamartho'si matkarmaparamo bhava ।
madarthamapi karmāṇi kurvan siddhimavāpsyasi ॥
Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa says: if we are unable even to practice abhyāsa-yoga, then we should become dedicated to actions done for Bhagavān, and through such action we will attain perfection.
अभ्यासे abhyāse = in practice / in repeated effort, अपि api = even / also, असमर्थः asamarthaḥ = unable / incapable, असि asi = you are, मत्कर्मपरमः matkarmaparamaḥ = one for whom my work is supreme, भव bhava = be / become, मदर्थम् madartham = for my sake, अपि api = even / also, कर्माणि karmāṇi = actions, कुर्वन् kurvan = doing, सिद्धिम् siddhim = success / accomplishment, अवाप्स्यसि avāpsyasi = you will attain

अथैतदप्यशक्तोऽसि कर्तुं(म्) मद्योगमाश्रितः ।
सर्वकर्मफलत्यागं(न्) ततः(क्) कुरु यतात्मवान् ॥
athaitadapyaśakto'si kartuṁ madyogamāśritaḥ ।
sarvakarmaphalatyāgaṁ(n) tataḥ(k) kuru yatātmavān ॥
Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa says: if we are unable to do even this, then, taking refuge in His worship, we should renounce the results of all actions with self-mastery.
अथ atha = now / if, एतत् etat = this, अपि api = even / also, अशक्तः aśaktaḥ = unable / incapable, असि asi = you are, कर्तुम् kartum = to do, मद्योगम् madyogam = my yoga / the yoga connected with me, आश्रितः āśritaḥ = having taken refuge in / having resorted to, सर्वकर्मफलत्यागम् sarvakarmaphalatyāgam = renunciation of the results of all actions, ततः tataḥ = then, कुरु kuru = do / perform, यतात्मवान् yatātmavān = self-controlled / one with a disciplined mind

◈Do I treat my achievements as entirely mine, or can I offer them to Bhagavān first?
◈Can I receive both success and difficulty as prasāda, without arrogance or bitterness?

श्रेयो हि ज्ञानमभ्यासाज्(त्) ज्ञानाद्ध्यानं(वँ) विशिष्यते ।
ध्यानात्कर्मफलत्यागः(स्) त्यागाच्छान्तिरनन्तरम् ॥
śreyo hi jñānamabhyāsāj(t) jñānāddhyānaṁ(v) viśiṣyate ।
dhyānātkarmaphalatyāgaḥ(s) tyāgācchāntiranantaram ॥
Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa concludes the discussion of sādhana by saying that knowledge is better than mechanical practice, meditation with knowledge is better than mere knowledge, and karma-phala-tyāga is specially praised because renunciation immediately brings peace.

◈Can I act sincerely while reducing my anxiety and ownership over the result?

अद्वेष्टा सर्वभूतानां(म्) मैत्रः(क्) करुण एव च ।
निर्ममो निरहङ्कारः(स्) समदुःखसुखः क्षमी ॥
adveṣṭā sarvabhūtānāṁ(m) maitraḥ(k) karuṇa eva ca ।
nirmamo nirahaṅkāraḥ(s) samaduḥkhasukhaḥ kṣamī ॥
Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa begins describing the parā-bhakta as one who has no hatred toward any being, is friendly and compassionate, free from possessiveness and ego, balanced in pleasure and pain, and forgiving.
अद्वेष्टा adveṣṭā = one who does not hate, सर्वभूतानाम् sarvabhūtānām = of all beings, मैत्रः maitraḥ = friendly, करुणः karuṇaḥ = compassionate, एव eva = indeed / also, च ca = and, निर्ममः nirmamaḥ = free from possessiveness / mine-ness, निरहङ्कारः nirahaṅkāraḥ = free from ego, समदुःखसुखः samaduḥkhasukhaḥ = equal in sorrow and happiness, क्षमी kṣamī = forgiving / patient

सन्तुष्टः(स्) सततं(य्ँ) योगी यतात्मा दृढनिश्चयः ।
मय्यर्पितमनोबुद्धिः(र्) यो मद्भक्तः(स्) स मे प्रियः ॥
santuṣṭaḥ(s) satataṁ(y) yogī yatātmā dṛḍhaniścayaḥ ।
mayyarpitamanobuddhiḥ(r) yo madbhaktaḥ(s) sa me priyaḥ ॥
Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa says that the devotee who is ever contented, always a yogī, self-disciplined, firm in conviction, and whose mind and intellect are offered to Him, is dear to Him.

◈Is my devotion supported by clear understanding, or do my emotions and intellect move in different directions?
◈Do I seek contentment from outer arrangements alone, or am I growing toward inner fullness?

यस्मान्नोद्विजते लोको(कः) लोकान्नोद्विजते च यः ।
हर्षामर्षभयोद्वेगैः(र्) मुक्तो यः(स्) स च मे प्रियः ॥
yasmānnodvijate loko(ḥ) lokānnodvijate ca yaḥ ।
harṣāmarṣabhayodvegaiḥ(r) mukto yaḥ(s) sa ca me priyaḥ ॥
Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa says that the devotee by whom the world is not disturbed, who is not disturbed by the world, and who is free from elation, intolerance, fear, and anxiety, is dear to Him.

अनपेक्षः(श्) शुचिर्दक्ष(:) उदासीनो गतव्यथः ।
सर्वारम्भपरित्यागी यो मद्भक्तः(स्) स मे प्रियः ॥
anapekṣaḥ(sh) śucirdakṣa(ḥ) udāsīno gatavyathaḥ ।
sarvārambhaparityāgī yo madbhaktaḥ(s) sa me priyaḥ ॥
Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa says that the devotee who is free from dependence and expectation, pure, efficient, impartial, free from sorrow, and who has renounced all selfish undertakings, is dear to Him.
अनपेक्षः anapekṣaḥ = free from expectation / not dependent, शुचिः śuciḥ = pure, दक्षः dakṣaḥ = alert / efficient, उदासीनः udāsīnaḥ = impartial / indifferent, गतव्यथः gatavyathaḥ = free from distress, सर्वारम्भपरित्यागी sarvārambhaparityāgī = renouncer of all undertakings, यः yaḥ = who, मद्भक्तः madbhaktaḥ = my devotee, सः saḥ = he, मे me = to me / for me, प्रियः priyaḥ = dear

◈Are my actions guided by clarity and duty, or by ego-driven self-importance?

यो न हृष्यति न द्वेष्टि न शोचति न काङ्क्षति ।
शुभाशुभपरित्यागी भक्तिमान्यः(स्) स मे प्रियः ॥
yo na hṛṣyati na dveṣṭi na śocati na kāṅkṣati ।
śubhāśubhaparityāgī bhaktimānyaḥ(s) sa me priyaḥ ॥
Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa says that the devotee who is not overpowered by elation, hatred, grief, or craving, and who gives up both puṇya and pāpa as binding pursuits, is dear to Him.

◈When strong emotion comes, do I still have enough inner space to protect my viveka?
◈Do I do good actions for inner maturity and dharma, or mainly to gain recognition, puṇya, or reward?

समः(श्) शत्रौ च मित्रे च तथा मानापमानयोः ।
शीतोष्णसुखदुःखेषु समः(स्) सङ्गविवर्जितः ॥
samaḥ(sh) śatrau ca mitre ca tathā mānāpamānayoḥ ।
śītoṣṇasukhaduḥkheṣu samaḥ(s) saṅgavivarjitaḥ ॥
Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa says that the mature devotee is the same toward enemy and friend, honor and dishonor, heat and cold, pleasure and pain, and is free from attachment.

तुल्यनिन्दास्तुतिर्मौनी सन्तुष्टो येन केनचित् ।
अनिकेतः(स्) स्थिरमतिः(र्) भक्तिमान्मे प्रियो नरः ॥
tulyanindāstutirmaunī santuṣṭo yena kenacit ।
aniketaḥ(s) sthiramatiḥ(r) bhaktimānme priyo naraḥ ॥
Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa says that the devotee who is the same in criticism and praise, measured in speech, content with whatever comes, free from attachment to residence, and firm in Self-knowledge, is dear to Him.
तुल्यनिन्दास्तुतिः tulyanindāstutiḥ = one for whom blame and praise are equal, मौनी maunī = silent / restrained in speech, सन्तुष्टः santuṣṭaḥ = contented, येन yena = by whatever, केनचित् kenacit = anything whatsoever, अनिकेतः aniketaḥ = without fixed abode / not attached to a residence, स्थिरमतिः sthiramatiḥ = one whose mind is steady, भक्तिमान् bhaktimān = one who has devotion, मे me = to me / for me, प्रियः priyaḥ = dear, नरः naraḥ = person / human being

ये तु धर्म्यामृतमिदं(य्ँ) यथोक्तं(म्) पर्युपासते ।
श्रद्दधाना मत्परमा(:) भक्तास्तेऽतीव मे प्रियाः ॥
ye tu dharmyāmṛtamidaṁ(y) yathoktaṁ(m) paryupāsate ।
śraddadhānā matparamā(ḥ) bhaktāste'tīva me priyāḥ ॥
Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa concludes that those devotees who, with śraddhā and with Bhagavān as the supreme goal, sincerely follow this immortal dharma as taught are exceedingly dear to Him.
