Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa now comes down one step in the spiritual ladder. After discussing the highest level of nirguṇa contemplation, He now presents Viśvarūpa upāsanā as the next level for those not yet ready for the subtlest jñāna-yoga sādhana. This is still a powerful spiritual discipline, but it is more accessible because it gives the mind a vast and sacred form of Bhagavān to relate to.
The first instruction is sarvāṇi karmāṇi mayi sannyasya — dedicating all actions to Bhagavān. Here sannyāsa does not mean renouncing action. It means offering or dedicating action. When we perform an action, we do what is to be done, and once the action is completed, it becomes part of the universe. The result then comes through the laws of karma, which are understood as the hands of Viśvarūpa īśvara. Therefore, dedication means an inner attitude of offering the action and being ready to receive the result without grumbling, murmuring, cursing, or resistance.
The second expression is matparāḥ — keeping Bhagavān as the primary goal. Even while doing actions in the world, we should remember that the purpose of this discipline is spiritual growth. This level is not meant for getting lost in worldly activity; it is meant to qualify the mind for the next step, which is nirguṇa īśvara jñānam.
The third expression is ananyenaiva yogena — with an undistracted spiritual commitment. We may be involved in many duties, responsibilities, family situations, and social roles, but we should not forget the larger journey. Just as a traveler may get down at intermediate stations but must not forget the final destination, we may transact with the world without forgetting the spiritual goal.
Finally, māṁ dhyāyanta upāsate means that these devotees meditate upon Bhagavān. The meditation here is not merely occasional prayer, but Viśvarūpa upāsanā supported by a life of dedication, receptivity, and remembrance.
